The Margy

The Margy is a short river and has a history of excellent fishing for both salmon and sea trout. The Margy flows beside Ballycastle Golf club and starts at the confluence of the Glenshesk and Carey rivers about 1 mile from the sea. Most of the Margy is effected by high tide. Many anglers have over the years enjoyed the excellent runs of sea trout that the river supported. Although the sea trout are not as plentiful as they once were the club aims to build up sea trout stocks by encouraging catch and release. The Margy is a Strictly Fly Only fishery and is restricted in the number of visiting rods that can fish there!  Anglers are also expected to give way to the rights of any golfers and should be aware of the risk of wary golf balls.

As with the rest of the system anglers are at all times expected to behave with coutesy towards each other, and fish through the pools without pool hogging one particular spot.

A good number of salmon fresh from the sea are caught there every year.
